Sir Paul has put out
a new album of Venti proportions: his 21st solo effort, Memory Almost Full
was recently introduced to the masses on Hear Music, the new Starbucks music label, a first for Macca whose contract with
EMI recently expired. Now, while I rolled my eyes and groaned at the news of this icon fraternizing with the corporate enemy
(as I’m sure many others did), I was told by a man on my friend’s Ford’s radio that the reasoning behind
this marketing was for a more comforting reason than trying to sell a few lattes while listening to Sir Paul croon ad nauseum
(though I suspect this wasn’t completely eradicated from the marketing strategy). Supposedly, this is designed to revolutionize
music, and this label shuffling is supposed to make buying his, and other albums in the same position, for as little as $5
online (this is what the DJ on the radio informed us.)
Which, if true, is great
news, and I applaud Sir Paul for trying to shake things up a bit in the industry, since he certainly has the power to do so.
But rest assured, even with this progressive thinking, Macca benefited from the deal regardless. Memory Almost Full saw Paul’s highest spot on the US charts in a decade, and his reps
will not discuss what’s in it for him financially as far as this Starbucks deal goes, though it's safe to say he's probably
not making breadcrumbs. Nevertheless, the man put out a pretty solid 21st album.
